IMPORTANT: This guide offers the most common sizes. It is important to know that there are no legal standard mattress dimensions. As a result, if you are looking for a specific bed size in Canada or the USA, be sure to ask your vendor for exact measurements if you are unclear.

In Canada and the USA, we use terms like Queen, King, Double, and so on to define mattress sizes. In other places, like various European countries, the language can be different, and the same name could apply to a quite different size. So be on the lookout if your set isn’t from North America!

COIL INNER-SPRING MATTRESS SIZE CHARTS

When the coils in spring or coil mattresses are made the count and thickness of the wire vary. This can affect the width and length of coil mattresses. Because of this in Canada and the USA, manufacturers must produce inner-spring or coil mattresses within 1” of what they have indicated in their marketing.

 

The sizes between coil and foam mattresses vary a bit, but there’s a particularly good reason! Innerspring coil mattresses are much harder and don’t squish around as foam mattresses do. As a result, and to make it easier to fit into frames and tuck sheets under them, they’re often just a touch smaller. This difference won’t be noticeable in your bed frame, so don’t worry!

The stiffer nature of the innerspring coil does have to be accounted for, but the manufacturers do that for you.

The double, or the full, used to be the industry standard for a bed meant for two people. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that the Queen-sized mattress overtook the market, as ad campaigns didn’t want to depict couples getting too close, and the space was quite appealing.

It’s a popular choice nowadays for spare bedrooms, luxurious singles, growing children, or rooms that would just be overtaken by a bigger mattress size.

Full mattresses work great for children as they are cost-effective and are long enough to last until the child has grown into an adult and can buy their mattress for their needs.

When you are unable to comfortably fit your entire body on your mattress, you are potentially compromising your quality of sleep. With the wide variety of dimensions available, no one should have to sacrifice comfort because of their above-average height. Except for certain NBA players but I’m sure they can afford custom mattresses if they need to.

For individual sleepers, a Twin or Double-size mattress will provide a good amount of room to make sure a quality sleep. If you share a mattress the bigger you can afford the better. For two people a Queen or King-sized mattresses are ideal.

If you’re lacking space, a double-sized mattress is the next best option. It did use to be the standard; it was made for two people at one point. We’re just a bit more spoiled than we used to be and for good reason!

When sharing a mattress with two adults and children or pets a King or California King-sized mattress is considered the best. These large mattresses will provide space for two or more people to sleep comfortably.

Putting a big mattress in a too-small bedroom can be a safety hazard and make the room feel cramped and uncomfortable, but sometimes it’s worth the extra comfort to fill the room. Bedrooms aren’t meant for much other than sleeping anyways! Just watch for fire hazards!

Taller beds can be difficult to crawl in to and short ones are harder to get out of, so all Gotta Sleep mattresses are 10.5 inches deep.
