Adjustable Beds FAQ

Today, more and more people suffer from sleep deprivation, and it’s no surprise. Sometimes it’s too much stress, sometimes it’s too much work, and sometimes you’re simply not sleeping in a bed that’s good for you. And if that’s the case, an adjustable bed is just the thing you need.

It brings numerous benefits and around 9 percent of U.S. consumers already own it. Adjustable beds offer great back support, improve circulation, ease your allergy problems, help with snoring, asthma, sleep apnea, and much more. They are highly customizable and provide consumers with a chance to design their own sleeping experience. So let’s see how this works in more detail.

What is an adjustable bed frame?

An adjustable bed is a sort of bed that has a movable foundation below the mattress. This foundation is split into multiple moving and bending parts, which gives users the freedom to choose from an array of sleeping positions using their remote control and find the best one for them.

A king or queen-size adjustable bed can even be split from top to bottom to basically form two separate beds that you and your partner can adjust independently.

Thanks to a number of hinges, joints, and wires the adjustable bed is a) fully motorized and b) capable to bend based on user preferences. You can lift or lower your head, your upper body, your lower body, or your feet, or choose any combination of these. For instance, you can lift your head just a bit if you have sleep apnea or raise your legs to reduce swelling.

The best adjustable beds also have some more advanced additional features, such as adjustable legs, an emergency battery box, a Bluetooth connection, voice control, under-bed lights, USB ports, vibrating massage motors, and more.

Note: people also use terms like “adjustable bed frame”, “adjustable bed”, or “adjustable bed base” synonymously, although they’re not completely the same. In essence, an adjustable bed is just the base of the bed that can be fit into another bed frame and that sits below the mattress. However, have in mind that all three phrases – “adjustable bed, “adjustable bed base”, and “adjustable bed frame” are often used to signify the same thing.

Where to buy an adjustable bed frame?

In many furniture and mattress stores and all over the internet, including our adjustable bed webshop.

How do adjustable frames work?

An adjustable bed works thanks to a movable frame consisting of many motorized joints. Each joint rotates a certain part of the bed and you can control the angle with your remote control or your phone. By raising or lowering particular sections of the bed base you can adapt your sleeping position to your preferences or your health condition.

The mattress on top of the adjustable bed moves together with the base, ensuring a pleasant, comfortable, and personalized sleeping experience.

Are adjustable beds good for your back?

They can be very good for your back. Of course, there are various types of back problems, but if they’re a result of your awkward sleeping position or poor lumbar support, the adjustable bed comes to the rescue.

Users can adjust the bed in any way that’ll help relieve the pain. For instance, sitting in a slightly inclined position with support under the knees can help with different types of back pain or joint arthritis. But the number of options that an adjustable bed offers means you can go for any preference and any combination you find to be the most comfortable for your back and your body.

Are adjustable beds worth it?

For all those suffering from any kind of chronic sleep condition, they certainly are. The list of advantages that an adjustable bed provides is quite long:

  • Helps with all sorts of back and joint problems
  • Improves breathing, thus relieving you of disorders like sleep apnea or snoring
  • Reduces swelling
  • Eases your troubles with insomnia
  • Helps with digestion issues, especially heartburn and acid reflux
  • Enhances circulation, which is hugely important for anyone who is bed-bound
  • Makes it easier for those with mobility issues to get in and out of the bed

And all these are just health benefits. For those not suffering from a particular sleep condition, you can expect a great change in your general comfort, well-being, and sleep quality. If your only aim is to simply improve your sleeping experience, adjustable beds are among the best ways to do it.

Do adjustable beds need special frames?

Yes and no. On the one hand, you can’t fit just it into any frame. Obviously, you’ll need the bed and the frame to be compatible in size, but that’s no big deal since adjustable bed bases come in similar standardized sizes as regular beds. So if you own a king-size bed and you want to use its frame for your adjustable bed, just make sure you buy a king-size adjustable bed as well.

Also, not all types of beds support adjustable beds equally well. If your bed has slats or support rails, you’ll have to remove them in order to fit in the adjustable bed. That’s why platform beds are much better for this purpose than panel beds because you can unscrew the adjustable bed’s removable legs and just lay it on top of the platform.

Do adjustable bed frames work with any mattress?

Not at all. You’ll have to be very careful when choosing a mattress for your adjustable bed. First of all, you’ll have to make sure that it can bend, otherwise it won’t move smoothly together with the base and the adjustable bed would lose its whole point.

Hence some mattresses with coil systems won’t work with an adjustable bed. For most mattresses, you’ll be able to find out whether they are compatible in the product overview section.

Also, you’ll have to make sure that the sizes of the mattress and the base are consistent. It’s important to have in mind that your bed frame, adjustable base, and mattress all have to be the same size in order to fit into each other.

What is the best mattress for the adjustable bed frame?

Choosing the best mattress for you will simply depend on your needs. Most latex, memory foam, and hybrid mattresses go well with adjustable beds, and the same goes for some types of airbeds.

On the other hand, adjustable beds don’t really work well with innerspring mattresses as they’re not flexible enough. Being too stiff and rigid, they won’t be able to move the way the adjustable bed does and they won’t be providing any of the benefits that the adjustable beds normally do. Hybrid mattresses also have coils, but they’re equipped with a layer of foam and pocketed coils, which makes them much more flexible.

As for other details, they’re really up to your own preferences. Just make sure the mattress is made from high-quality materials, that it’s bendable enough, and that you feel comfortable laying on it.

How to assemble the adjustable bed frame?

Assembling an adjustable bed is quite simple and usually doesn’t involve any tools. Obviously, the exact process will depend on the particular type of bed, but in general, it works like this:

  • You turn the adjustable bed upside-down or on the side
  • You screw the legs to the base
  • Use the power adapter to plug it into the power supply
  • Install the mattress retainer bar that will keep the mattress from moving around
  • Flip the bed to a standing position (recommendation: don’t do this alone as adjustable beds can get quite heavy and difficult to handle, so they could hurt you or get damaged if you’re not perfectly careful)

Sometimes you’ll have a bit more than these few steps, but don’t worry, it won’t be too complicated. You’ll probably just need to adjust the legs, plug in the emergency battery box, or set up a sync cord that ensures that split beds can move simultaneously, but none of this is rocket science.

How to adjust the bed frame from queen to king?

If you’re asking if the adjustable bed base can be expanded from queen to king, it can’t. Most adjustable beds have multiple different sizes and you’ll just have to pick the one you want and settle with it.

On the other hand, if you want to modify the frame of your old bed so that the adjustable one can fit into it, that can be done in certain cases. Queen and king beds are the same in height, but they differ in width – 76 inches vs. 60 inches.

So what you need to do is widen the support rails (or remove them), the headboard, and the footboard so the frame can accommodate a king-size bed and mattress, but this usually means a lot of work and involves various tools and some carpentry skills.

Bottom line is – this can be done, but it usually isn’t worth it. If you own a queen size frame, it’s best to just buy a queen size adjustable bed and a queen size mattress and not make your life harder.

How to adjust bed frame height?

Modifying the bed height is quite easy for adjustable beds. They usually come with adjustable legs that can be screwed and unscrewed at your wish. Most brands will offer you at least a couple of different sizes of legs, and some even sell bed legs as a separate product in case the ones you have get damaged or simply don’t suit you.

Although adjustable beds have many features, they can’t normally move the whole mattress up or down. They can move and rotate their sections freely to provide the best sleeping experience, but if you wish to change the height of the bed, the remote control won’t be enough and you’ll have to flip the bed over and adjust its legs.

How to hide an adjustable bed frame?

The best way to hide the adjustable bed is either with special bed skirts or by camouflaging it with another bed frame. Some adjustable beds look really good, but others aren’t too aesthetically appealing. Sometimes it looks too similar to a hospital bed, and that’s why some people want to hide it away or disguise it in a nice bed frame.

It may seem confusing how any bed skirt can fit onto an adjustable bed, given that it can move, rotate, and split, but there are specially designed ones that serve this purpose. These skirts usually don’t just get tucked under the mattress, and you’ll need to use things like Velcro strips, hook-and-loop fasteners, or bed skirt pins to make this work.

As for “hiding” an adjustable bed inside another bed frame, just make sure that the other bed can support the adjustable base. This is usually easier with platform beds than with panel ones. Also, make sure that the size of the frame and the size of the base is compatible.

How long do adjustable bed frames last?

Most adjustable beds can be expected to last at least 10-15 years. Of course, the answer to this question varies largely depending on the quality of all the elements of your bed. Some high-end brands even offer 20 to 40 years of guarantee, which makes life a lot easier for consumers who want to invest their money in adjustable beds.

In general, adjustable beds are quite solid and resilient. Their frames are usually very strong and made of steel that can last and endure damage. So the basic construction of the bed is more than reliable, especially if you go for some of the more prominent brands, such as Ergomotion or Beautyrest.

Nevertheless, some other parts of the bed don’t have to be as tough. Luckily, some of these parts, such as legs and most of the motorized components can be replaced without hassle. Adjustable beds also tend to wear out some kinds of mattresses a bit quicker than usual, but you can still expect the mattresses to last for 7 to 10 years, maybe even more, depending on the type and quality of the mattress.

Do adjustable bed frames ruin mattresses?

They don’t really ruin them, but sometimes they do wear them out a bit more.  And it’s no surprise – they bend all the time, the weight of the person is awkwardly distributed and you’ll generally expect more action from a mattress you use with the adjustable bed than with the ones you use with regular beds.

However, this difference is negligible if you buy a mattress type that goes well with the adjustable bed. This includes memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses as well as some kinds of airbeds. If you go for a mattress that sits well on the base and moves seamlessly with it, it will last basically as long as it would on traditional beds.

Just avoid rigid mattresses, especially the innerspring ones. These will not only deteriorate quickly, but they will also be very difficult, if not impossible to sleep on or use in any way.

Are adjustable bed frames good for side-sleepers?

Adjustable beds are great for side sleepers. In fact, whichever general sleeping position you prefer an adjustable bed can help you enhance your sleeping experience since it offers various options and alternatives.

When it comes to side sleepers, the modifications offered by the adjustable bed can help them further relax their back and joints. For instance, instead of using additional pillows to lift your head a bit, you can just raise the head section of the bed and reduce the pressure on your neck and shoulders. It will also help relax your knees and improve circulation.

What is the best adjustable bed for the money?

Here I was thinking about writing a few sentences about whichever is your best-selling one and inserting a link to the product. Or you can simply link to any product you see fit.

How to choose an adjustable bed frame?

This is not an easy choice and it should factor in many different parameters. But it basically comes down to your needs and preferences. For instance, people with serious sleeping disorders will probably be ready to invest more money than those who just wish to improve their sleeping habits. And different bases and mattresses will better fit users with different disorders, different injuries, or different kinds of pain.

You should also pay attention to the additional features. Those who play sports professionally or spend too much time sitting in front of the screen in awkward positions will be very happy with the massage feature. Or if you sleep in pair, a split bed is an excellent choice as it allows both users to adjust their part of the bed the way they like.

All in all, there’s no single best solution for everyone. So it’s crucial to know what your body and mind need to get some good sleep. It even makes sense to talk with the professional about this, especially if you suffer from serious sleeping issues.
